Free VIN check

Type the 17-character VIN of a car with US or Canadian history. The decode and the record counts are free; the full report is one payment.

No account, no card and no email address - the free preview opens straight away.

How to check a VIN for free

Three steps, and only the last one costs anything:

  1. Enter the VIN in the field above. We check the format and the check digit as you type, so a typo never reaches the lookup.
  2. Read the free preview: the decoded make, model, model year, engine and plant, the title status, and how many records exist in each history category - accidents, odometer, recalls, sales and auction listings, theft and liens, previous owners.
  3. Decide. If the counts are worth it, unlock the full report for one payment; if the VIN has no records at all, the purchase is blocked and nothing is charged.

What the free preview shows

For any 17-character VIN, the free preview shows:

  • The decoded vehicle - make, model, model year, engine, body style and assembly plant - and whether the 17 characters form a valid VIN.
  • The title status: clean or branded (salvage, rebuilt, junk, flood, lemon), plus the number of title records on file.
  • How many records exist in each category: accidents and damage, odometer readings, recalls, sales and auction listings, theft and lien records, previous owners.
  • The last known odometer reading and the last listed price, when they are on file.

What it does not show is what is inside the records - the dates, the states, the mileage figures, the damage descriptions, the listing photos. That content is the report, and the report is the paid part.

What the full report adds - and what it costs

The full report costs $14.99 per VIN - one payment, no subscription.

It is every record behind the counts, as a web report and a PDF. Line by line, this is where the free check stops and the paid report starts:

How long it takes

The free preview opens in a few seconds. After payment the full report is assembled in about 60 seconds and opens on screen; the email with the PDF follows a minute or two later. The report stays online for 90 days: reopen it from the email, or sign in with the order email address - a one-time link, no password.

You pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay or a card, in US dollars, and the price is shown before you pay.

No records, no sale

When the free check finds no history records for a VIN, we do not offer a report for it. The purchase form is not shown and the order is refused, so there is no payment page to reach in the first place.

That rule is deliberate. An empty report is worth nothing, and blocking the sale is more honest than taking the money and arguing about a refund afterwards. You still keep the free decode and the confirmation that nothing is on file - which is an answer in itself.

Records also appear over time. A VIN with nothing today can carry title and listing records a few weeks later, so it is worth re-running the free check before you finally buy the car.

Why the free step is worth running on its own

Even if you never buy a report, the free check answers four questions that are expensive to get wrong.

  1. Is the VIN real, and is it this car? A decode that does not match the advert - wrong model year, wrong engine, wrong plant - is a reason to stop right there.
  2. Does the car have any recorded history at all? Recent imports and vehicles that never changed hands in the US often have none, and no report can invent it.
  3. Is the title flagged? A salvage, rebuilt, junk or flood brand shows up in the preview as a status, before you have paid anything.
  4. Is a report worth buying for this VIN? The counts are the report's table of contents. A dozen records across five categories is a document worth reading; a single title record is not.

Frequently asked questions

Is the VIN check really free?

Yes. The preview costs nothing, needs no account, card or email address, and you can run it on as many 17-character VINs as you need, one at a time. What costs money is the report: the records behind the counts you see for free.

What does the free VIN check show?

The decoded vehicle, the title status and how many records exist in each history category - title, accidents, odometer, recalls, sales and auction listings, theft and liens, previous owners - plus the last known odometer reading and the last listed price when they are on file.

What does the full report add, and what does it cost?

Every record behind the counts: the dates, states and brands in the title history, each accident record, every odometer reading checked for rollbacks, the recall details, the listings with prices and photos, and the theft and lien records - as a web report and a PDF. It is one payment per VIN with no subscription; the price is shown beside the VIN field and on the pricing page.

How long does it take?

The preview is instant. After payment the full report is assembled in about 60 seconds and the email with the PDF follows a minute or two later.

Do I need an account or a subscription?

No. There is no account and nothing renews: you pay once per VIN, the report opens on screen and a link to it arrives by email with the PDF. The report stays online for 90 days, and you can reopen it by signing in with the order email address - no password. Packs of 3 or 10 are a balance of reports that never expires.

What happens if the free check finds nothing?

Then there is nothing to sell you. We do not offer a report for a VIN with no history records, so the purchase form never appears. Try the same VIN again in a few weeks - records are added as they are reported.

Is this a free vehicle history report?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. The free step is a preview: which categories of record exist and how many. A full history report - every record, with dates, places and photos - is the paid product.
